40,000 sq. ft., 3-Stories
Lake Flato
University Hall, the first cross-laminated timber building, is the newest addition to Universitys Business and Humanities District. This 40,000 sq. ft. mass timber structure now houses the districts active learning classrooms, two-tier classrooms, an auditorium, and a screening room. Student breakout spaces with varying scales of interaction are distributed throughout the building and provide diverse experiences needed to meet student needs.
The mass timber structural members are prominently showcased throughout the entire building, with all shear walls, beams, and columns left exposed to highlight their robust yet beautiful and breathtaking nature. Inspired by mid-century modernist architect ONeil Fords legacy on Trinitys campus, the buildings design seamlessly integrates into the campus skyline and creates a warm and welcoming environment connected to nature. This new structure brings life to the previously overlooked north portion of the campus. Featuring active learning classrooms, an auditorium, a screening room, and student breakout spaces, it offers diverse experiences that cater to the needs of the students.
The cross-laminated timber (CLT) used on University Hall is the first of its kind in San Antonio. With R.E ARCH & Works Constructions vast Mass Timber experience, lessons learned from other R.E ARCH & Works Constructions teams around the nation were captured and implemented. As a result, moisture mitigation plans, quality control plans, delivery documentation procedures, and protection protocols were created and implemented. With the gained experience, R.E ARCH & Works Constructions, along with architect partner Lake Flato, were able to host the Mass Timber in 3-2-1 event where clients had the chance to tour University Hall directly after topping out and learn why they should consider building with Mass Timber.
